...our Summer Reading Program for 2008
When you sign up for the Summer Reading Program, you get a booklog to record all the books you read this summer, and a special gift. Weekly prizes will be given out the first time you report each week, and there will be a Certificate of Completion at the end for those who meet the minimum requirements. Completing the following minimum requirements will also earn you a chance to enter the Grand Prize Drawing!
Grade/Age -- Group Name -- Goal
Ages 2-Kindergarten -- Little Winners -- minimum of 25 books
Grades 1-5 -- Library All-Stars -- minimum of 15 books
Grades 6-9 -- Varsity Readers -- minimum of 6 books or 1200 pages
There will also be coloring sheets, a weekly poster raffle, and weekly activities, many of which are featured below. New books, including a lot of new titles on sports and games, are being added to the shelves every day!
Registration for Summer Reading begins June 2nd and continues through June 30th. The first day to report your books if June 16th. The last day to report your books is July 18th.
SUMMER ACTIVITIES 2008
These activities will run every week between June 16th and July 18th. Registration begins one week before each activity, and you can register for activities in person, by phone, or online using our events calendar. Registration is not necessary for drop-in programs.
Team Q2 - Ages 9 and up - Mondays at 6:30
Have you ever wanted to learn how to use a sewing machine? Do you need hours for community service? Then join the Quality Quiltmaker Team. Team members will make a quilt to donate to a local charity, and learn to use a sewing machine at the same time. No experience necessary. All materials will be supplied, thanks to a grant from the Friends of the Library. (age 8 allowed if accompanied by an adult)
Let's Play! - Ages 2 1/2 - 6 - Tuesdays at 10:30
Summer is the time to play with your friends! Our Pre-K friends are invited to the library on Tuesday mornings to share some fun picture books, make easy crafts, and eat delicious snacks together. (This program will include 2-year-olds with a more independent spirit.)
Game It - Ages 11 and up - Tuesdays at 1:30
Join the Brookfield Young Adults for craft-making and edible creations (think Goth sock puppets and tie-dye cupcakes), food tasting contests (think Fear Factor Food Party), and other random summer stuff. See ya there.
Babies, Books and Ballgames - Ages 6 months-2 1/2 years - Wednesdays at 10:30
Join Miss Louise for stories, songs, rhymes, and some bouncing around! Make new friends and have some fun. Parents and caregivers are asked to attend with their children. (This program will include 2-year-olds who are more comfortable with babies than with big kids.)
Rock On - Drop-in, all ages - Wednesdays, 1:30-4
Here's your chance to try out all those fun electronic games you've been hearing about. The library owns copies of Rock Band, Guitar Hero, DDR, and Nintendo Wii. We'll have a different game up and running each week, in the Storytime Room, for open play on Wednesday afternoons. Do you have what it takes? Stop by and find out.
Summer Sports-tacular! - Drop-in, all ages - Wednesdays at 6:30
Join us as we celebrate games and sports of all kinds with books, activities and a craft to take home! From baseball to bowling, each week we'll explore another way to have fun. No registration required.
The Reading Game - Ages 9-12 - Wednesdays, July 2nd and 9th at 4:00
Like to read? Like to talk about books with your friends? Join our kids' book discussion group! Each month, we'll read a book, then get together to have some fun and talk about it. The following week, we'll watch the movie, and see which we like better. (And, of course, snacks are a given!)

Games Geeks Play - Ages 7-12 - Thursdays at 1:30
Egg-citing Egg-speriments, Pop Bottle Physics, What Geeks Really Dig, and other Geekish games are in store for junior scientists this summer. You might even end up with a white lab coat and a pocket protector. Join Miss Becky in the Geek Lab for an afternoon of Science fun.
Advanced Team Q2 - Ages 9 and up - Thursdays at 6:30
Experienced quilters will have the chance to take their skills to the next level by creating advanced quilts for charity. Previous quiltmaking experience is required. Register in person with Miss Becky.
Friday Adventure Theater - Drop-in, all ages - Fridays at noon
We'll make a game each week of guessing what movie we show on Friday! We will post clues in the library throughout the week, and then, each Friday, bring your lunch, guess what the movie is, and watch and eat in air-conditioned comfort. This all-ages program will be a great way to wrap up each week.
Our regular Young Adult programs continue throuth the summer for kids ages 11-16; after-hours programs are for kids ages 12 and up. Registration is not necessary; all you have to do is show up, bring a friend if you want to, and have a blast! Be sure to check out our Young Adult blog for all the details.
