A patron's request for help in finding Julia Child's My Life in France reminded me of how much I'd enjoyed M.F.K. (Mary Frances Kennedy) Fisher's portrait of Aix-en-Provence in her memoir of life and food, Two Towns in Provence.
Fisher writes fondly of the food of Provence, as well as the peaceful quality of Provence in the period she lived there with her two daughters, after her divorce from her third husband. Â
The two accounts published together here, "A Map of Another Town," about her time in Aix-en-Provence, and "A Considerable Town," about Marseilles, a city she found fascinating despite its reputation as a dangerous place.
"Appetites" recounts M.F.K. Fisher's fascinating and surprising personal life.
