Noting her her sense of humor and shrewd analysis of both character and the American scene, Annie Proulx's work has been compared to that of Mark Twain, William Faulkner, and Flannery O'Connor.
This collection of short stories is the third in a series set in present-day Wyoming. The first collection contained "Brokeback Mountain," the basis for the Oscar-winning film starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall. The second collection was called Bad Dirt. Proulx is also the author of The Shipping News, which was also made into a film.
Michael Knight of the Wall Street Journal said, "Ms. Proulx writes with all the brutal beauty of one of her Wyoming snowstorms."
