Book one of the Dresden Files
Harry Dresden has a one of a kind job because he's the only person in Chicago who holds the title "Wizard for Hire." But being a wizard isn't all it's cracked up to be. He can't make piles of money appear before your eyes or make you a love potion, which is probably why business is so slow.
So when the Chicago Police turn to Harry to consult on a grisly double murder committed by black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's black magic, there's a black mage behind it and Harry gets more than he bargained for when the mage finds out Harry's name.
That's when things start to get more interesting.
